Five of the world’s seven species of marine turtles come ashore to nest in Sri Lanka (Daraniyagala, 1953). Those are the green turtle (Chelonia mydas) , leatherback turtle (Dermochelys coriacea), loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta), hawksbill turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata) and the olive ridley turtle (Lepidochelys olivacea).
