Abstract: Puttalam lagoon is considered one of the most productive ‘basin estuaries’ in Sri Lanka. Scattered among the 88 fishing villages around the lagoon are about 165,000 people directly or indirectly dependent on Puttalam lagoon fisheries, including nearly 6,000 fishing directly in the lagoon.
