Abstract

Indian mackerel, Rastrelliger kanagurta, is one of the most valuable food fish in Sri Lanka. It is the 4th dominant species in the small pelagic fishery and is mostly landed as a by-catch with other small pelagic fish. Small pelagic fish landings are monitored by the National Aquatic Resources Research and Development Agency (NARA) of Sri Lanka, but the sampling coverage under the NARA monitoring programme is inadequate.
